Truck Scale Capacity vs. Division, Explained

Product category
Application industry

Capacity is the maximum load and division is the smallest displayed step – why a truck scale needs both, and what else decides what is achievable.

Capacity is the largest load the scale is designed to weigh; division is the smallest change the display shows. A truck scale is specified with both, and neither number means much on its own.

Capacity follows the heaviest vehicle and the heaviest axle that will use the platform, with a margin for the way loads are applied. Division follows the smallest weight difference that has to be seen, for example 10 kg on a 30 t scale. If the division is made smaller than the structure can justify, the display changes in steps the scale cannot really resolve.

The two numbers are also tied to the platform. A longer deck usually means more capacity and more load cells, and the number of cells sets how the load is shared. When a site asks for a finer division, the honest answer is often that the foundation, the deck stiffness and the cell class decide what is achievable, not the indicator setting.

Before ordering, state the longest and heaviest vehicle, the heaviest axle, the traffic pattern, whether weighing is static or in motion, and what the readings are used for. If the weights are used for trade or settlement, regulatory requirements apply separately and have to be confirmed for the market where the scale is installed.

Core Question

What do capacity and division mean when specifying a truck scale?

Applicable Conditions

Static weighing of trucks and heavy vehicles where the maximum load and the readable increment both have to be stated, usually together with the platform size and axle loads.

Limitations

Division is readability, not accuracy: it does not describe the measurement error of the scale by itself. Any trade, legal or verification requirement is a separate matter for the market where the scale is installed, and a finer division cannot be promised from an indicator setting alone. Demo example.

Key Claims & References

Capacity and division describe different things and are specified together with platform size and axle loads; deck stiffness, foundation and load cell class set the resolution that can actually be delivered.
