Truck Scale

A truck scale weighs a whole vehicle standing on a long platform. The truck drives on, stops, and the total weight is read on the indicator, with axle groups read as well when the site needs them. The platform usually sits in a pit so its surface is level with the yard, or on a foundation with ramps at ground level where digging is not practical.

Sizing starts with the vehicles. The longest combination decides the platform length, with room for the truck to line up and stop; the heaviest vehicle and the highest axle group load decide the capacity, and the loads are concentrated under the wheels rather than spread over the deck. The division has to suit the smallest weight the site actually acts on, which is why capacity and division are best settled together for the vehicles in use at this yard.

Civil work and traffic flow decide the rest. A pit keeps the yard flush but needs drainage and a cleanable pit, while an above-ground platform with ramps avoids excavation and instead uses approach length for the ramps. Decide the entry and exit direction – straight through or in and out the same end – and leave space for a queue so a waiting truck does not sit on the platform. Where the indicator, the printer and any driver display will stand belongs in the same conversation as the foundation.

Finally, how the weight leaves the scale: whether a ticket has to be printed, whether the reading has to be handed to the site system, and whether the driver needs to see the weight from the cab. Sort out the platform and foundation first, then the reading route; changing either later is the expensive part.
